When should we as a community begin to ask questions about our energy supply? After the energy fiasco in Texas this winter, over 3 million without power, also in Portland OR, 350,00 without power, I realized I don’t know anything about where Ely’s energy comes from. Minnesota was one of 14 states that needed “rolling blackouts” to help the national energy grid during the outages in Texas and Oregon https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/15/us/storm-blackouts.html And this at a time when, due to the pandemic, the U.S. was at a 30 year low for energy use. https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/us-energy-hit-30-year-low-pandemic-shutdowns-72055713 What would the effect of this winter’s storms have had if the demand for electricity had been higher. How would such storms effect Ely, Minnesota?
Where does Ely get its electricity? Do we have options? What is our plan for the future? Could we withstand a rolling blackout in the middle of winter and for how long?
